Harbor casino complex resists wintry blasts
from Lake Michigan thanks to Shelter-Rite
architectural fabrics
Buffington Harbor Casino
Able to withstand even the most severe winter weather, Shelter-Rite® architectural fabric by Seaman Corporation was used to create an attractive hospitality and entertainment facility on the shores of Lake Michigan.
The Buffington Harbor Casino, which supports two 37,000-square-foot riverboats, is housed inside an 80,000-square-foot pre-engineered tension structure complex constructed by Sprung Instant Structures, Inc.
Located directly on Lake Michigan, the complex is exposed to extremely heavy lake effect snow loads and 80 mph Exposure D wind loads, requiring a durable fabric with exceptionally high life expectancy. In addition, the building is surrounded by a number of large, heavy industrial plants, resulting in a concentration of airborne pollutants.
Sprung created the architectural structure with highly tensioned 24-ounce opaque Shelter-Rite architectural fabric coated with fluoropolymer for extra durability, cleanability and long life expectancy.
Three years after the complex was completed, there are no signs of any degradation. In addition, the anti-stick, non-stain performance of Kynar-coated Shelter-Rite architectural fabric has helped to maintain the clean and bright appearance of the complex.
